Statement – National Emergency Declaration
February 18, 2019
The DCCM stands firmly against the emergency declaration signed by Mr. Trump on Friday. This manufactured emergency, supported by no empirical data, serves no other purpose than to benefit his own political ambitions and will ultimately divert billions of dollars away from actual emergency response efforts.
Mr Trump’s dismissal of constitutional authority and the rule of law cannot go unchecked. This is why we stand united here today, united with all of you, and the protests around he country. And we will continue to stand united against this tyranny at every turn, through every congressional challenge, through all of the legal challenges. We must continue to stand united.
We must continue to stand united because, while Mr Trump may manufacture national crisis through hyperbole and rhetoric, we know – as all of our speakers have declared – that there are true emergencies that need to be addressed, from combating climate change to health care as a human right and the 33,000 gun deaths per year, 47,000 deaths from opioid overdose, 150,000 people displaced from wildfires in California alone, 2.5 million homeless children in America… all issues that would actually qualify as a national emergency.
We stand with Attorney General Xavier Becerra that these “actions are a huge overreach of constitutional authority. California will not let this stand.”
We wholeheartedly agree with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s statement that “The only emergency at our border is the humanitarian one Trump created himself, by demonizing and ripping apart families. This manufactured crisis is racist, wasteful, and an outrageous abuse of power from someone too reckless and hateful to hold it.”
Now, we must send a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated. Now, we must stand united. Now, we must rally together and exclaim for all to hear, “The people united will never be defeated” – “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!”
