Statement by the Marin Democratic Party
San Rafael City Council District 4

The Marin Democratic Party would like to warn voters in North San Rafael about misleading statements and tactics used by San Rafael City Council Candidate, Rachel Kertz. A recent campaign mailer, as well as an email sent from from Ms. Kertz’s campaign, employ tactics that are intended to mislead voters into believing that she is supported by the Democratic Party. To be clear, Greg Knell is the ONLY candidate endorsed by the California Democratic Party. The Marin County Democratic Party and the Marin County Young Democrats. Marin Democrats voted overwhelmingly to endorse Mr. Knell over Ms. Kertz at our September endorsement meeting due to Greg’s many years of service on the San Rafael School Board and other commissions, and his long-standing action, advocacy and commitment to our democratic values at the local level.

We have come to expect false and misleading statements by national politicians, especially Republicans. However it is truly concerning to see these actions perpetrated by a candidate right here in our own community. In a campaign mailer sent by Kertz’s campaign last week, a version of the Democratic Party logo appears on the front portion of the mail piece that frames Ms. Kertz as supported by “Democratic Leaders & Progressive Organizations.” This tactic has been used before by candidates, and the consultants of candidates, who do not receive the Democratic Party endorsement in an attempt to “trick” voters. Equally disturbing was an email sent by Kertz’s campaign presenting a comparison piece between the two candidates and encourages voters to “Know the Facts” by reviewing a side by side comparison. The chart provided lists Kertz as supported by “Democratic Leaders” but does not list the fact that the Democratic Party endorsed Greg Knell as part of the comparison. The email included other grossly inaccurate statements.

These tactics are clear attempts to mislead voters and the Marin Democratic Party strongly admonishes Ms. Kertz for employing these deeply concerning strategies. Moreover, elections often reveal the character of the candidates who run in them and we believe these actions speak loudly about the type of poor leadership and decision making that Ms. Kertz would bring to the table. We encourage all voters in North San Rafael who want to support a Democratic voice in the San Rafael City Council District 4 to VOTE for Greg Knell, the ONLY candidate endorsed by the Democratic Party.

Statement – National Emergency Declaration

February 18, 2019

The DCCM stands firmly against the emergency declaration signed by Mr. Trump on Friday. This manufactured emergency, supported by no empirical data, serves no other purpose than to benefit his own political ambitions and will ultimately divert billions of dollars away from actual emergency response efforts.

Mr Trump’s dismissal of constitutional authority and the rule of law cannot go unchecked. This is why we stand united here today, united with all of you, and the protests around he country. And we will continue to stand united against this tyranny at every turn, through every congressional challenge, through all of the legal challenges. We must continue to stand united.

We must continue to stand united because, while Mr Trump may manufacture national crisis through hyperbole and rhetoric, we know – as all of our speakers have declared – that there are true emergencies that need to be addressed, from combating climate change to health care as a human right and the 33,000 gun deaths per year, 47,000 deaths from opioid overdose, 150,000 people displaced from wildfires in California alone, 2.5 million homeless children in America… all issues that would actually qualify as a national emergency.

We stand with Attorney General Xavier Becerra that these “actions are a huge overreach of constitutional authority. California will not let this stand.”

We wholeheartedly agree with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand’s statement that “The only emergency at our border is the humanitarian one Trump created himself, by demonizing and ripping apart families. This manufactured crisis is racist, wasteful, and an outrageous abuse of power from someone too reckless and hateful to hold it.”

Now, we must send a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated. Now, we must stand united. Now, we must rally together and exclaim for all to hear, “The people united will never be defeated” – “El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!”
